In the wake of the Hutton Report, Greg Dyke resigned from his director generalship of the BBC in protest at the ejection of Andrew Gilligan and the BBC's unreserved apology to the PM. Now there's tremendous jockying for position of director general, a pervasive fear that the Beeb will be battered into submission by the government, and thousands of journalists and other Beeb staff are walking out in protest at the conclusion of the Report, the firing of Gilligan, and potential caving into the government. It's an unholy row, and the aim of the 'Support the BBC' campaign is to show just how much people appreciate the Beeb as it is - especially its refusal to buckle under to governments.
